WELCOME TO YOURSCOPE!

YourScope is a student-led initiative which aims to inform students through the distribution of accessible and relevant articles on current affairs. Contributors express their thoughts on important global news through well-informed articles. All articles are sorted into 'Explained', 'Opinion', and 'Interviews' for clarity.

Maia Harrison - Founder and Editor

Hi!

I'm Maia, and I'm in year 13 studying the International Baccalaureate in the UK. I'm incredibly passionate about journalism, women's rights, and have a particular interest in American politics.

My main reason for founding YourScope was to get more teens aware of and involved in current affairs in a proactive way; it's our future after all.

Please don't hesitate to comment on my articles with your thoughts on the issue -- debates are encouraged!

Kareena Kamdar - Founder

Hi everyone!

I'm Kareena, I'm currently taking A levels in Economics, Geography, Maths and Further Maths AS. I'm particularly interested in examining geopolitics, behavioural economics as well as global trade.

I was inspired to create YourScope due to the increasing number of unread The Economist articles piling up on my desk, and wanted to provide information targeted at students. I endeavour that this website will shine a light on current issues as well as some of the hidden gems in the realm of economics.

Laura Beaumont - Contributor

Laura Beaumont is an avid activist of human rights, a debater and public speaker. She is currently in Year 12 studying History, Philosophy and Ethics, Politics and Maths and her love of writing essays has inspired her love of writing articles. Moreover, she invented writing, the aeroplane and the internet, was the first person to reach Mars and the North Pole, which she completed on the same day. She has also written one hundred highly regarded books and is likewise a greater teller of stories – but not all of them are true, much like this biography.

Emma Boyden - Contributor

Hi everyone! I'm Emma and I'm 16 years old.

I am deeply passionate about History (in particular the Enlightenment and Mao's China) as well as current affairs. Currently, I’m highly involved in Amnesty International, so human rights are very close to my heart and will hopefully be the subject of some of my future articles. Despite being raised in the UK, I was born in the States, and am a huge believer (and I mean to the extent that it’s embarrassing) in freedom of speech, and have a keen interest in all topics relating to it - ranging from cultural appropriation to our right to applaud.

If you disagree with any of my views, please please please feel free to leave me a comment as (I’m sure my friends can confirm) I love a good debate!

Anna Hardy - Contributor

Hi everyone! I’m Anna, I’m 17 years old and am currently taking A levels in English, History, Philosophy and Politics. I hope to read Law at university in the UK, and therefore have a particular interest in the legal side of current affairs or historical events, and will hopefully be bring this perspective into some of my future articles.

I’m British, but was born and spent the vast majority of my childhood living in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, I speak incredibly basic (that’s code for, “absolutely no”) Mandarin/Cantonese and I’m fully aware of how disappointing that is, so apologies in advance!

I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria and am fascinated by how the social sciences and humanities help us understand the world and each other. My areas of interest include African politics, human geography, sociology and anthropology. I also am an avid reader, with my reading list including great storytellers such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Harper Lee, Toni Morrison and Andrea Levy. I write articles exploring topics such as racism, immigration and gender equality hoping to shed a light on these issues in the context of Nigeria and Africa in general.

Alice Jamal - Contributor

Hello! My name is Alice, I'm 17 and I am currently taking A Levels in English, Theatre Studies, Politics and History. I'm hoping to either go to Drama School or study English & Drama at university. I am known to be incredibly opinionated regarding issues ranging from intersectional feminism, how to make the perfect cup of tea, socialism and why Hercules is possibly the most underrated Disney film.  I'd love to hear your views on my articles, so don't hesitate to comment!

Hi everyone! My name is Za and I am currently studying Economics, History, Politics and Maths for A-Level. My favourite section on Netflix is documentary, meaning anything from Making a Murderer to Wild Wild Country. You will probably be able to see this in my writing as I enjoy US politics and any type of conspiracy theory. I plan to study in America for university which also helps me with my favourite topics.

Please feel free to leave me a comment if you have any questions about my articles or if you want recommendations on ways to waste hours on conspiracy theory videos!

Hi! I'm Divya, and I will be contributing a lot of news from India for this magazine. I'm interested in feminism and LGBT+ rights, and I hope to cover those angles as well. Other than that, my hobbies include reading avidly and consoling myself that I will actually write a book once I'm done with the IB and don't have schoolwork piled up all the way to my nose.

Hi! I'm Jiya. I'm 14 years old. I am of Indian origin (love indian food!), was born in South Africa and lived there until I was 10 (the best childhood) and currently reside in the UK. I am interested in writing about the current sociopolitical environment (domestic and international) - its interesting, thought provoking, very debatable and rapidly changing. I am not 100% sure of the subjects I am going to pursue further  at school but I am always eager to voice my thoughts and opinions. I'd greatly appreciate all of your views on my articles and any constructive criticism you would like to give!
